It’s Black History Month!

Since 1976, the year when President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized Black History Month, February has been a month to celebrate Black American excellence and achievement, while also recognizing those in American history that fought for change for future generations. Use this month as a time to support Black businesses and communities, educate yourself on Black History and all the achievements of Black Americans our public schools did not teach us, and fight against the systemic racism that persists in America today.

Check out our Instagram (@readin.magazine) to learn more about what we’re doing for Black History Month!

  • Did you know that Black History Month used to be Black History WEEK? Carter G. Woodson spent his life being loud and proud about Black American excellence and achievements. He went so far as to create the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASALH), an organization whose missions is to “promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community.” Woodson founded the Negro History and Literature Week, a week that was later renamed to Negro Achievement Week, and in 1926, just a year after its official creation, Woodson sent out communications for this week to be celebrated nationally and annually.

According to the NAACP, Negro Achievement Week was celebrated from February 7th through February 14th to include President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday and Frederick Douglass’s birthday, the former of which is considered an iconic abolitionist.

Readin’ from the Heart

Readin’ Magazine put on a workshop at the 2025 Pittsburgh Book Festival called ‘Readin’ from the Heart: Ethically Reading in these Unethical Times’ which was a conversation about books, community, and how to read with intention.

The workshop sold out in the first week of registration and that just melts our little hearts! That was proof that reading is powerful and people aren’t gonna take book bans, library defunding, and harmful themes in books lightly. We, the Readin’ community, will fight back and we are so happy that y’all are with us!
